I don't understand, how can the ping go high if you are a listenserver, are you? What exactly is the problem, too many bots getting addeed or a high ping, what?

If you're running a dedicated server on the same machine, you need to put it in a higher priority than HL, otherwise when you start it up and try to play, all the processor cycles will go to the game and not the server, and cause lag that way..

Either reduce the size of your listenserver ( aka: maxplayer limit ) or get a faster processor.

See, when you max out your available cpu cycles, your system then devolops what's called "choke" which in turn causes what appears to be lag.

i fixed it
the problem was that my dedicated server wasn't readning the bots_config.ini file
and was useing defaults values
it's a pentuim 233mhz mmx blink.gif comp so it has alot of problems

Choke's actually lost packets from the client to the server, Loss is lost packets from the server to the client, both of which will make you skip around and jump backwards in a map though..

Choke or loss, It doesn't really matter what you call it, the resulting effect is still lag. But needless to say, I think we found the heart of the problem.

I would have thought that old of a machine would be in a museum by now. I was sorely mistaken.

LOL Good call Sandy.. I just recently had to upgrade my server to an Athlon XP Barton 3000+ due to the high CPU usage..

I believe steam's minimum system requirements are...

Pentium 2 @ 400mhz or faster
64mb ram or more
Dx7 compatable video card

How someone can bare to play on steam even at that level, let alone, anything less, is beyond me.

Haha, a friend of mine played and beat HL1 on a P1 133MHz, with a 4 meg video card... That was painful.
