I liked Half-Life 2.
But... It could have been much, much better. The potential alone of it is so high that it could form into a solid. It just hasn't been exploited enough, in my humble opinion. I see in it, a game exploiting a technology. And not a technology exploiting a game, sadly. It was the same case with Doom 3. But in my opinion, Doom 3's case was horrible. It felt blend. Empty. Half-Life 2 has something special in its atmosphere, it's well done. But there's to many places where I felt quite nothing. Just walking around, mindlessly killing life forms. The Coasts levels, for example (No spoilers ahead), they could have been made with such a terrific, involving atmosphere. But it seemed to...how could I say...to clean. So many things missing. Look at the very first part of it, for example. There's about nothing to do in there. No to mention I had that feeling I had to run away from sequences instead of taking the time to fight enemy forces. And, come to think of it, I think Half-Life 2 has the following MAJOR flaw, and it's quite a fact, too, which is: The sheer number of total enemies in the game. Don't you guys agree ? I mean, H-L 2 ISN'T an adventure game, it's a F-P-S for God's sake. Yes, I know. The Ant Lions spawn infinitely, endlessly in the Coasts levels. But that's a very, very cheap way to feature action in a game. In my humble opinion. And I don't really care how much time and efforts from the developers it takes to pre-set enemies, and blah blah. Those guys made that awesome Source engine from scrap. They're the best out there. They could have thought about that. Easily. And what's up with those metalic-like reflections on tires ? And other surfaces where reflections aren't as clear as metal or water. Looks like they didn't verify which objects can reflect stuff. There's many, many mistakes in H-L 2...but I think it's still one of the best F-P-S ever released for the PC platform. I'm glad I bought it, and I can't wait for the future modifications for it, such as DoD: Source. |
