NS crashes when I create a new game. But it runs fine when I join games. After it crashes and I start up NS again. It'll say that I can't run in OpenGL and it will run in software mode. From there I cannot change from Software Render to OpenGL until I restart the comp altogether. After restart, I can join games fine, but will crash again if I create a server.

Ok, how about listing a few details about the system your working from?
as in: video card, processor, memory, OS choice and are your drivers upto date. You wouldn't believe how many problems arise from out dated drivers alone. |

I'd go so far as to ask.. are you even using RCBot?

lol, yes I am using RCbot. I'm not new to the HL engine, I have used bots before, whether it be POD bot or HPB bot etc. For the poster above, my rig is a lil outdated (understatement) P3 733mhz 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 320mb memory Updated drivers? Third party and official for optimal performance. Windows 98SE It's only NS with the server creation right now. Every other HL mod runs fine. |

Yeah, no kidding "a lil outdated". I'm not even sure if steam even properly supports 3DFX cards anymore. I know you can't get offically updated drivers for that card, it's no longer supported.
Anyway, what version of NS are you attempting to run and are you using metamod? |

Steam works fine with 3dfx thank you very much.
I'm running the latest version of NS. (NS 3 Beta 5 I believe) I'm not sure if I am using this metamod as I am new to the concept. I installed RCbot using this guide http://rcbot.bots-united.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=516 |

The server doesn't care what kinda video card you got, I have a Voodoo4 4500 in mine, just because that's what I had lying around.. and its got drivers that work on win2k3 as a standard, so what do I care...
NS .. if I dare say it.. is like the worst efficiently coded of the mods.. I mean it's completely obvious if you look at the resource usage, NS is very VERY heavy on memory too.. A likely cause is yer OS.. 98 is.. ... how to put this... crap. It's totally not designed for a server environment. I'd recommend upgrading to Win2k Server or Win2k3 if you can get ahold of it... Win2k server is available at almost EVERY college for like $20, and Win2k3... well, that's a hard one to get a hold of, and can cost anywhere from $1000 to $4000 depending on which flavor you get. As for the processor you have, I had a AMD K7 old school athlon @ 750mhz running an 8 bot server fine, but then again I have a gig of ram in that server.. I'd suggest first to strip off all the addons you have, even RCBot, then see if it runs. If it does, add them back one at a time to see if you can whittle it down to a specific 1 or 2, or a clash between two or whatever. If it doesn't run, I'd suggest a trip over to http://www.memtest86.com/ and grab their memory tester, and do some deep scans on your ram. |

Ok, if it's crashing as soon as you try to start up a listenserver ( LAN game ) but plays fine when you connect to someone elses server then it's most likely something metamod related that got overlooked. Maybe you put metamod in the wrong directory or miss spelled an entry in the liblist.gam or metamod/plugins.ini file?
If you can copy and paste the contents of your liblist.gam and plugins.ini files, this maybe a good place as any to start looking for your problem. |

Alrighty
Same game, same problem, different OS. I just installed XP admist all of this botting chaos and just tried it out in case 98 was my problem. Nope. Here's a more detailed explanation of my steps through creating a server. 1)Create Server 2)Picks a non CO map 3)Sets to Lan game 4)Start game (or Ok or create server w/e) 5)Menu closes and no game is created still in NS main menu 6)Repeats step 1-4 7)NS crashes to desktop for those who know C++ after these steps if (open_NS == true) run NS in Software mode; else if (restart_computer == true) starting NS again will bring me back to steps 1 through 7 But anyways, it seems the XP had no impact in the creation of server process. Here's my liblist.gam: game "Natural Selection (beta 5)" url_info "www.natural-selection.org" url_dl "http://www.natural-selection.org/" version "v3.0" size "165000000" svonly "0" secure "0" cldll "cl_dlls\client.dll" hlversion "1110" // How to allow training but disable "New game"? type "multiplayer_only" // Don't show models in browser nomodels "1" nohimodel "1" // Only show NS-compliant maps mpentity "info_mapinfo" // Using HPB_bot support for now //gamedll "dlls\ns.dll" //gamedll_linux "dlls/ns_i386.so" gamedll "addons\metamod\dlls\metamod.dll // Training map //trainmap "ns_training" Here's my plugin.ini win32 ../rcbot/dlls/rcbot_mm.dll That should be it? |

What are you using to start the server? The steam game menu thing, or the HLDS hard-core server thing you should be using to make a server?
And if you're using the HLDS hard core thing, are you using the GUI or the command line? And if you're using the GUI, have you tried the command line? Because... well I do like some of the aspects of the GUI, the command line uses less overhead and I think is generally faster.. Also with the GUI, it can take like 5 minutes to actually start the thing up, I use the GUI at LAN parties so I have more control over whats doing what, and I can point and click on the thing, and do it all that way. I'm gonna write a program to take note of the cpu and memory usage, as well as see if I can't grab the number of players on the server and such, and log em all to a big text file or something. Of course it'll be written in VB, and I'll muck up the API calls so people can't disassemble it and do it in C for Linux, because I hate Linux just that much |

As I thought, a small metamod related oversight. One quick question. Did you copy that from my "how to" post or was that a mistake on your part?

I'm can't remember really, but either way it's fixed, and commanding is hell hard. I'm not sure what I can do to increase FPS now, HL Toolz can only do so much, and lowering my resolution will be a last resort. Got any tips on that?

Unfortunatly, there are very little options open to you with your older PC to increase performance short of upgrading some hardware. First thing I would advize is to close down everything you don't need running like A/V software and such. Then reduce your in-game screen resolution to as low as you can stand and update all your drivers where you can. Lastly, a simple scandisk and defrag will help keep everything running as smoothly as possable.
Another thing to keep in mind is, the more bots your running, the more CPU time they will eat. Try keeping the number of bots down to help keep frame rates up. |

How many bots max do you recommend on my machine. I'm going with 9 (5v5) and it's starting to chug. But that's on 1027x768. And is there a build at waypoint command? (game not bot) I usually have bots sitting by things needing to be built. Also, recommend a map with little or no ladders, their navagation through those are a bit awkward.
