Has anyone experienced this....

After adding bots to an NS game generally after about 30 minutes of gameplay, half-life freezes and ceases to work properly. I don't think the problem is steam because playing NS without the rcbot folder installed seems to work fine. I am unable to idenify the problem as because no error message is displayed once I'm forced out of the program. If anyone has any idea or insight as to how this can be fixed please reply to this post.

Thanks

Are you using any other plugins along with rcbot?

Or daft as it sounds which map are you using? ns_lost is the main culprit on my server, giving the symptoms you describe. I've removed it from my maps list along with a couple of others like ns_posiedon, and 24hr>72hr is the norm' for server 'up' time lately. rolleyes.gif

I'm using whichbot with rcbot. After I was done writing the first post, I checked the rest of the forums and I found that both of you seem like your involved in a similar problem. I haven't played on NS_lost but no matter because with every map I try, it always ends up crashing. I usually get about an 1 hr maybe before it eventually freezes.

Oh by the way, I was and still am using the latest beta rcbot (that is if you are talking of win32 metamod debug dll file listed on the beta discussion thread).

I've had my fair share of crashes while testing but they are not crashes in the bot directly, but could be a cause of it which makes it more difficult to debug it, or it could not be the bots fault... I dunno, If it were then I'd need to check I'm using memory properly sad.gif

There is a bug in the later releases of whichbot ( win32 version ) that seems to constantly crash the ns.dll. These cover the later v0.92 betas to the current v0.93's that have the status debug info. It causes dedicated servers to close and listenservers to freeze.

Recommend reading the whichbot forums and finding v0.91. That was the last version of whichbot "before" the status debug stuff was added. This one is much more stable but not as refined.

I havent got crash issues with the latest WB, it's RCBot. RCbot cant find reputations for the WB aliens, then does something spammy at the map change and freezes. I have this problem using HM, RCbot and WB at same time, just HM and RCBot at the same time and just WB and RCbot at the same time.

Wb and Hm on its own work fine. But then again thats me.

Sorry to inform you chaos but rcbot is not the plugin causing the ns.dll to crash, whichbot is. I have seen the latest rcbot beta crash but it was just itself. Anyway, rcbot crashes are usually pretty rare. Probably still something buggy in the megahal system but I'm not sure myself.

By the way chaos, is your dedicated server win32 or linux?

w32, and it is RCbot because HiveMind and RCBot crashes. HiveMind on its own doesnt.

I found another thing that may cause a crash. A function finding a bots pointer returns valid all the time meaning it will use an un-used bot slot to do things like: giving tasks, killing etc. Oh yeah this would only happen if other bots are running that are not rcbot.

is there any way you can get the rcbot to detect whether the server is running HiveMind or WhichBot and have a temporary fix for it?

Also, SandMan[SA], when I get errors after mapcrash it says "RCBOT_MM.DLL" caused the error. This is the latest beta DLL, I just renamed it from HPB_Bot.dll

Detecting if other bots are running and changing configurations is not the solution, I don't know what to do even if I can detect if other bots are running (easy to do) to solve 'temporarily'. What I'm doing right now is to try and fix permanently smile.gif

QUOTE (ModChaosControl @ Aug 30 2004, 11:39 PM)
when I get errors after mapcrash it says "RCBOT_MM.DLL" caused the error.

I never said that rcbot doesn't crash. I know it does but the crashes are localized with itself. It's not that big a deal since rcbot can run for several hours now without crashing. I'm simply stating a point that if your also running the latest whichbots, expect the ns.dll to crash very quickly.
